After the fall of Haarlem, Don Frederik turned his attention to Alkmaar. The city was surrounded and stormed several times, without result. The siege lasted from August 21 to October 8, 1573 and ended when the Spanish army had to abandon the siege after William of Orange had ordered the dikes around Alkmaar to be breached. Alkmaar was one of the first Dutch cities to be relieved and which successfully resisted the Spaniards.
