The coinage system of Juliana remained in place after the accession of queen Beatrix, with the exception of the introduction of the 5 guilder coin to replace the 5 guilder bill in 1988. On the 1st of January 2002 the guilder was abolished, and the euro was introduced as the new national and European coin. With this came an end to a currency that had survived for nearly 700 years.
