Friesland

Coins have been struck in Frisia since the 7th century. Early issues were imitations of golden Roman and Byzantine solidi and trientes. Later silver sceattas and imitations of coins of Louis the Pious were struck. After the end of the Spanish-Austrian-Burgundian rule the States of Friesland seized the opportunity in 1580 to found a provincial mint. The mint stayed in commission until 1751.
