Republic
The earliest bronze coin of the republic, the as grave, was first issued around 280 BC. In order to facilitate commerce, several other denominations soon followed. The designs usually featured mythical scenes or personifications of deities, and early specimens were heavily influenced by Greek coinage. However, since each mint magistrate was free to choose the design, they also used the coins to advertise their families for political purposes.
