Rare Syracusan gold coin unearthed in ancient necropolis

Archaeologists have uncovered a rare fifth-century BC Syracusan gold coin during an emergency excavation at the Maddalusa necropolis near Agrigento, Sicily. The coin dates to the late 5th century BC and contributes important data to the archaeological record of the area associated with ancient Akrágas. The discovery highlights the archaeological significance of the necropolis, which has yielded marble sarcophagi, box tombs, and infant burials from early phases of Akrágas.
