In 1794 the town of Maastricht was besieged by the French revolutionary armies under General Kléber. The siege took place in the autumn of 1794 during the War of the First Coalition between France and the other European powers and ended after 45 days with the capitulation of the city on November 4. A year later, the city was annexed by the First French Republic.
