Wilhelmina
During the reign of queen Wilhelmina 5 cent pieces made of nickel were introduced to replace the silver ones. The 1 and 2½ cent were produced in a darker tone, because they were too easily mistaken for gold. In 1936 the gold standard was abolished.
During the Second World War the Nazi occupiers strived to remove all reminders of the royal family, including coins. All denominations were gradually replaced with coins made of zinc. In the meantime the production of silver guilders, quarters and dimes was continued in the United States.
